Abstract

The Women’s Foundation’s (TWF’s) Life Skills Programme (LSP) aims to promote positive images in secondary school students, particularly girls, to make them feel empowered and with more control in their lives. This study evaluated the programme using a mixed design, with 12 indicators derived from established standard scales in Chinese. The indicators comprised: an understanding of self and others, financial management, management of stress and emotion, personal goal setting, sexual relationships, cooperation and team spirit, talent development, work attitudes, career exploration, and connections with teachers and students. Findings indicated that the programme had a positive effect on 371 secondary school students in Hong Kong. This was particularly the case with girls. The overall effect was different between students in Band 1 and Band 3 schools. Themes emerged from the qualitative data and are discussed here. It was also found that if modifications are incorporated, the programme should be suitable for other secondary school students. It is hoped that this study provides valuable information for schools that intend to incorporate the LSP into their school curriculum.
